ABOUT

The paintings

Gehl paints memories. Whether they are scenes or portraits, colour or not, they are always memories, tarnished and deformed by a recollection that seeks a physical form with which to appear and tell.

She navigates an alternation of rivers of colour and their total absence, as in the indecision we all have in choosing whether our thoughts – maybe even our dreams- are in colour or black and white. *

Starting with found photographs as reference, Gehl diverges from the photo by working from memory and imagination. Her ash paintings involve a painstaking sorting through and an intricate application of various shades of ash, the works in oil are built up through a repetitive process of layering and over-painting.
